Top Side
Do mattresses have a top side and a bottom side? The label.?

Yes I know this is an odd question. On a mattress is there a top side and a bottom side? Is the top of a mattress the side where the label usually is?

There are actually several types of mattresses, the standard and most common is a double sided mattress where it is finished on both sides (I’m assuming this is what you have). With this style mattress you should flip / rotate them to add to it’s longevity. So which ever side is on the bottom is not the top.

It also happens to be a great piece of rock & roll that lifts the listener through a variety of moods and textures from genteel acoustic (“Oracle”) to thrilling metal (“…

Swish Nicholson: A Biography of Wartime Baseball's Leading Slugger

Swish Nicholson: A Biography of Wartime Baseball’s Leading Slugger

$19.2

This is the first biography of Bill “Swish” Nicholson, a Cubs favorite and baseball’s top slugger during the World War II era. Only days out of college in 1936, Nicholson went straight to the majors, putting in a brief appearance for Connie Mack’s Philadelphia A’s before he was optioned to the minors. His contract eventually purchased by the Cubs, Nicholson spent 10 years on the North Side of Chicago, where he would claim National League home run and RBI titles twice, earn spots on five National League All-Star teams, and play a pivotal role on the pennant-winning club of 1945. After Nicholson was traded to the Phillies, amid the dissenting cries of Cubs fans, he helped the 1950 Whiz Kids to the National League title with two dramatic pinch-hit home runs. This balanced, carefully researched biography covers Nicholson’s life early and late, thoroughly describes his legendary feats of slugging, and gauges his accomplishments in light of the era in which played.

St. Paul was in the position of a nobleman here. “Of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of Hebrews, as touching the law a Pharisee;” but all these things he ” counted loss.” He brushed them all away. Christ was the one object which eclipsed everything he had before counted gain. He had put those things most precious to him side by side with Christ, and said, ” Let all go; here, in Christ, is my choice.” Can you, as St. Paul did, take the things you value most, and with true sincerity of heart, put them side by side with Christ, and count them all loss ? This will determine whether you are a child of God or not. What place has Christ in your heart? In the past, the present, and the future with St. Paul, it was all Christ. Can you say, as to the past, ” I counted ; ” as to the present, ” / count; ” as to the future, “I press toward the mark.” Here is the power for making you happy, for making you an earnest worker for God. ” What things were gain to me, these I counted loss for Christ; yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss. I press toward the mark.” What is Christ to you now ? Can you say, ” I still count, as I did at first.” Is Christ to-day as precious to you as when you first started on your Christian course ? So many Christians who found Christ very precious to them at first, as time goes on, allow other things to come in, and Christ ceases to hold the place He once held. St. Paul says, ” / do count ! ” Can you say, ” To this day and hour 7 count all things loss for Him ? ” Everything depends on this—your happiness, your power for working for Christ, for walking with God. With many Christians it is not thus. Christ is at the bottom, and a fair outward life at the top, but hundreds of other

Excerpt: Events Arts and literature Births Deaths A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The flag of Maastricht (Dutch : Vlag van Maastricht , Limburgish (Maastrichtian variant ): Veendel vaan Mestreech or Drappo vaan Mestreech ) is the official flag of Maastricht , the capital city of the province of Limburg in the Netherlands . It constitutes a red vertical surface with a five-pointed star on its left side (a star that is common amongst many flags e.g. the flag of Chile ). It had been an historical flag, with its first image of appearance dating from 1545, of the municipality but was replaced with a flag identical in design to, amongst others, the current Polish flag in 1938. To avoid confusion, the old flag was reinstated in 1994. History In 1438 the flag of Maastricht is described as being as a six-pointed star on a red field, with the first historic image dating from 1545. The mentioned image was published in the Wappenbuch von Meister IK -book in Frankfurt am Main , Germany . However, in 1549, the flag is stated as being “yellow-white-red”. In 1647, the white-star-on-red design had apparently returned when the Peace of Münster treaty was signed. The next known design is the white-red (with the upper part of the flag being white, and the lower part being red) design similar to the Polish flag. In 1993 it was decided by the municipal government to reinstate the first design and the flag was re-inaugurated on January 1, 1994. Design Flag of Maastricht on top of the Fort Sint Pieter (Saint Peter’s Fortress)The height of the white star on the flag has to measure 3/5 of the entire flagheight and the space above and beneath the star has to be equal. Furthermore, the proportions between the height and the width has to be 2:3. This design designation has been in use

Excerpt: Pan Zareta, was a chestnut Thoroughbred racehorse born in the United States in 1910. She competed from Mexico to Canada, as well as in eight U. S. states. While she never won a significant race, and only once beat a top-level horse (Old Rosebud), she was still called “Queen of the Turf.” Bred by J. F. and H. S. Newman, from Sweetwater, Texas,Pan Zareta was born in 1910. Her sire was Abe Frank, and her mother was Caddie Griffith, who was sired by Rancocas. Pan Zareta’s lineage traced back to Hanover and Hindoo on her multiple stakes-winning sire’s side (Abe Frank), and to Leamington on her dam’s side (Caddie Griffith). Pan Zareta’s third dam on her mother’s side, a certain 1869 Texas born Mittie Stephens, caused a problem; Mittie Stephens was listed in the American Stud Book as a ‘non-thoroughbred’. Still, due to some complexities in the rulings, Pan Zareta was considered a Thoroughbred. It is interesting to note that neither Pan Zareta’s dam, Caddie Griffith, nor Pan Zareta herself appear in the American Stud Book. Known as “Panzy” (she was named for Panzy Zareta, the daughter of the once mayor of Cd. Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico), she traveled the country, appearing virtually anywhere, constantly competing. She was ridden by anyone handy and trained by an assortment of available conditioners–H.S. Newman, E. Foucon, and E.T. Colton are most frequently credited as trainers. She ran an astounding 151 races and won 76 of them–winning and starting in more races than any other mare in U.S. racing history. On 24 different tracks, she always carried higher weights than any of her rivals, males as well as females, often up to 140 pounds (she once carried an unheard of 146 pounds, giving away 46 pounds to the runner up.) She carried 1… More:

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! 2 Minutes to Midnight is a song by British band Iron Maiden. The song is released as the band’s tenth single and second track from their fifth album Powerslave. The single was released on August 6, 1984 and rose to number 11 in the UK Singles Chart and number 25 on Billboard Top Album Tracks. The song was written by Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson. The song has references to the Doomsday Clock, the symbolic clock used by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. In September 1953 the clock reached 23:58, the closest the clock ever got to midnight. This occurred when the United States and Soviet Union tested H-bombs within nine months of one another. The first guitar solo is played by Dave Murray followed by a guitar solo played by Adrian Smith. The first B-side is a cover of British progressive rock band Beckett’s “Rainbow’s Gold”. Another B-side, titled “Mission from ‘Arry”, is a recording of an argument between bassist Steve Harris and drummer Nicko McBrain.

‘I missed a book review deadline on account of reading Candle for Lucifer in two morning sittings. Riveting! The author gets right inside the criminal mind.’ Crime writer Colin Wilson’Andrew de Berry needs to be congratulated for challenging the hypocrisy and corruption of the Church, and for his ebullience in doing so in the form of a crime novel’. Thriller writer Robert Harris (Author of, Pompeii, Lustrum, etc)’de Berry is a potent and necessary thorn in the side of the Establishment. A brilliant piece of first-time writing.’ The late Christopher Morgan: Former religious affairs correspondent The Sunday Times’An intriguing read…utterly thought provoking’. Jeremy Lewis of the Nottingham Evening Post’I was simply gripped from start to finish.’ Dawn Bond of The Newark Advertiser’Writing out of the top drawer…Compelling and un-put-down-able!’ Mary Evans former correspondent for the Exmouth Journal ‘As an avid reader, I found A Candle for Lucifer quite simply knocks The Da Vinci Code into a cocked hat! Brilliant writing, which cries out to be made into a film.’ Tony White, QMG – the arresting officer of the Black PantherA Candle for Lucifer depicts how to outward appearances good and evil are easily confused, especially under the mask of the religious Establishment. To those within the Church, Revd Canon Wilkes appears to be a good and devout man, although to a group of drinkers in the local pub he is quickly identified as pure evil. From many years working both as a parish priest and prison chaplain, the author presents an assortment of characters from the very disreputable to the very good. When evil disguises itself as Light, the story reveals how in a world of opposites nothing is as it appears. From the Latin ‘lux’ meaning Light, Lucifer is another name for the planet Venus when it rises as the morning star.

Excerpt: Cobh Ramblers Football Club (CRFC) (Irish: ) is an Irish football club playing in the A Championship. The club, founded in 1922 and elected to the league in 1985, hails from Cobh, County Cork and play their home matches at St. Colman’s Park. The club’s colours are claret and blue. Stephen Henderson guided them to the First Division title for the first time on the 10th of November 2007 which saw Cobh promoted to the top flight for the first time in 12 years. Henderson resigned at the end of the 2008 season after Ramblers were relegated from the Premier Division where the battle went down to the last day which saw UCD, Ramblers and Finn Harps relegated. They subsequently failed to gain a license for the League of Ireland First Division and thus play 2009 in the A Championship. On the 19th January 2009 it was revealed that Dave Hill would return to the club to replace Henderson as manager. As of March 2010, Cobh Ramblers FC is in the hands of the FAI and the four administrators appointed to the club. Every financial detail will be carried out by these administrators. It is hoped that Cobh Ramblers FC will be back playing top flight football in the Airtricity League for the 2011 season. CRFC was originally a field hockey club but until the British withdrawal from Ireland many club members played football with the soldiers who were stationed at Cobh, leading to the Ramblers’ eventual re-formation as a football club. Cobh Ramblers joined the League of Ireland in 1985, after many successful years as a Munster Senior League side. One of the most successful of those teams w… More:

When the wind blew from the land he caught nothing, or but little at best, for it was a bitter and black-winged wind, and rough waves rose up to meet it But when the wind blew to the shore, the fish came in from the deep, and swam into the meshes of his nets, and he took them to the market-place and sold them. Every evening he went out upon the sea, and one evening the net was so heavy that hardly could he draw it into the boat. And he laughed, and said to himself, ‘ Surely I have caught all the fish that swim, or snared some dull monster that will be a marvel to men, or some thing of horror that the great Queen will desire,’ and putting forth all his strength, he tugged at the coarse ropes till, like lines of blue enamel round a vase of bronze, the long veins rose up on hisarms. He tugged at the thin ropes, and nearer and nearer came the circle of flat corks, and the net rose at last to the top of the water. But no fish at all was in it, nor any monster or thing of horror, but only a little Mermaid lying fast asleep. Her hair was as a wet fleece of gold, and each separate hair as a thread of fine gold in a cup of glass. Her body was as white ivory, and her tail was of silver and pearl. Silver and pearl was her tail, and the green weeds of the sea coiled round it; and like sea-shells were her ears, and her lips were like sea-coral. The cold waves dashed over her cold breasts, and the salt glistened upon her eyelids. So beautiful was she that when the young Fisherman saw her he was filled with wonder, and he put out his hand and drew the net close to him, and leaning over the side he clasped her in his arms. And when he touched her, she gave a cry…

Heath grew up in a family of ten kids by many fathers. He was sexually abused by his best friend’s father when he was 12 but he saw his way out of this grim childhood through education (to avoid the chaos and noise he retreated to the rooftops to study) and an amazing organization called Youth InSearch. He is now a solicitor at Gadens, has walked the Kokoda Track four times, is mentored by Bob Carr and will soon enter the political arena. Heath is still just 28 and he is truly a remarkable young man. Heath Ducker grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. He couldn’t even see the tracks from where he lived, in dilapidated government housing, with shattered windows and holes in the floor that let the weeds climb through. He lived with his emotionally fragile, single mother and nine siblings, conceived with half a dozen different fathers, none of whom ever moved in. Most days, there was nothing to eat but breakfast cereal.

A Tale of Two Demon Slayers

$28.95

Last month, I was a single preschool teacher whose greatest thrill consisted of color-coding my lesson plans. That was before I learned I was a slayer. Now, it’s up to me to face curse-hurling imps, vengeful demons, and any other supernatural uglies that crop up. And, to top it off, a hunk of a shape-shifting griffin has invited me to Greece to meet his family. But it’s not all sun, sand, and ouzo. Someone has created a dark-magic version of me with my powers and my knowledge—and it wants to kill me and everyone I know. Of course, this evil twin doesn’t have Grandma’s gang of biker witches, a talking Jack Russell terrier, or an eccentric necromancer on its side. In the ultimate showdown for survival, may the best demon slayer win.

Close to the house a terrace had been built, with a gravel walk on the top, under the windows. These, both in the parlour and drawing-room, were large French windows, opening down to the ground, so that you could walk through them out upon the terrace. A flight of stone steps led down into the rest of the garden, which was very prettily laid out. There was a smooth, green grassplot in the centre, with beds cut in it for flowers; and all round this were gravel walks, edged with box, and more flowers. Just beyond these bedsthere was a beautiful green hedge, which hid the furthest part of the garden from sight. A little walk ran round one end of this hedge, and behind was a very long bed, in which grew cabbages, onions, some peas and beans, a few lettuces, four gooseberry bushes, and a small plot of strawberry plants. All these good things, however, were not what Bella wanted to see just now, though she was well pleased with them whenever they appeared on the dinner-table. How fast she runs ! There! she has stopped at last, at the very end, and jumping for joy, exclaims, v Oh, it is coming out! my own dear little rose. Mamma, it is coming out!” Mamma is too far off to hear, and Bella has to be contented with talking to herself about her treasure. This was her own garden, and a very pretty spot it was, with a nice rustic seat in the corner, under the shelter of the hedge. Here she used to prevail upon her mamma to sit, with her work or a book, while she herself worked in the garden. The rose-bush she had planted with her own hands, right in the middle of the bed. Then there was a wallflower at each end, and a rowof mignonette all across the front. A primr…

A multifaceted approach for discovering novel regulators of alternative splicing in Caenorhabditis elegans.

$49.99

Many alternative splicing events are regulated by intronic pentameric and hexameric sequences that serve as binding sites for splicing regulatory factors. We hypothesized that intronic elements that regulate alternative splicing are under selective pressure for evolutionarily conservation. A WABA comparative alignment of C. elegans and C. briggsae identified 147 alternatively spliced genes that contain rare, compact, stretches of nucleotide conservation in introns surrounding alternative exons. Conserved intronic elements were collected into a database and algorithms were used to identify pentamers and hexamers present at higher levels in the conserved elements relative to total introns. Many high scoring nematode motifs correspond to known mammalian splicing regulators, such as (T)GCATG, indicating the mechanism of alternative splicing regulation is well conserved in metazoans. This approach also identified novel sequences such as TCTATC, whose role in splicing is under investigation, allowing us to take a step forward in defining a catalog of splicing regulatory elements for an organism. In vivo experiments testing two of the top scoring motifs, GCATG and TCTATC, demonstrated they were responsible for regulating alternative splicing of exons 15-19 of an unc-52 splicing reporter. When deleted individually, GCATG and TCTATC appear to exhibit opposing control on the splicing of exon 16. However, deletion of just these two motifs on either side of exon 16 has a unique splicing phenotype, suggesting these two sequences are just a small part of the larger system of splicing regulation for the unc-52 reporter. Because many splicing factors function by binding short stretches of RNA (4-7 nucleotides) in a sequence-specific manner, I hypothesized that the sequence UCUAUC (the RNA sequence of the splicing regulatory motif TCTATC) could be used to identify the partner splicing factors for this novel motif. Using RNA affinity chromatography I demonstrated that the C.

 ADV IN STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT VOL22

ADV IN STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT VOL22

$111.95

Enduring scholarly interest in the process of strategy making stems from an abiding assumption that some ways of strategizing are more efficacious than others, and thus lead to higher firm performance in the long run; higher than luck alone would bring. Expressions of interest in and endorsements of the strategy process are abundant in the academic literature. For senior managers and leaders, the question of how to make effective strategies stands usually at the top of their agenda. Not surprisingly then, the quest to uncover stable principles of good strategy making has attracted much support and interest over the years.Researchers who responded to the strategy process challenge have known many moments of exhilaration and disillusion. Scholarly insights took long to accumulate, perhaps too long to serve as the sole basis for helping the eager practitioner in search of simpler but applicable advice. As a result, a significant and often highly visible part of the field is characterized by a controversial normative orientation. But beneath this dramatic and unstable facade lies a gradual, patient, and seemingly more stable, hard-at-work, academic enterprise. Scholarly strategy process research apparently goes on, perhaps more than ever, suggesting that there is something fundamental and deeply interesting and profound about how strategies are made, where they originate in organizations, and how the process of strategy making impacts the performance of organizations. This volume is the culmination of our three year effort to explore and uncover this relatively hidden or at least less visible side of the strategy process field. Taken together, the sixteen chapters representcurrent scholarly strategy process research

AND THEY CALLED ME UNCLE TOM VOLUME I

AND THEY CALLED ME UNCLE TOM VOLUME I

$9.99

This is a cop story. Not just A-Cop-Story, but a cop story with a new twist. Written in the first person. It’s 1969, our hero, just out of the jungles of Vietnam, returns home to a busted marriage, and a world turned up-side-down. He’s in his late 20s, ten years in the Marines, Recon, Navy Seal, Delta, and nearly four years in combat. Wears the Bronze Star for valor, both the Army and the Navy Commendation, and a chest full of medals he’s forgotten what they are for. Oh-yes, we can’t forget his four Purple Heartsl. He was captured by the NVA, imprisoned, escaped, and lived with the animals in the jungles before being repatriated. This guy was a real RAMBO, that is until something clicked in him after the last Purple Heart, which nearly scrambled his brain. Disillusioned about the US’s involvement in Vietnam, and assigned to another unit headed back in-country in ninety days, our hero, Herman, jumps from the frying pan to the fire. He gets out of the Corps and becomes a cop. He has these super grandeurs of him returning to the street he became a man on, and being welcomed home by his people. But it didn’t happen that way. They called him Uncle Tom. At this point I take the reader through the day by day life of a black cop on the streets of San Diego. Through the Police Academy, a staged firing, to the bowls of the city as an undercover cop. No badge, no gun, super-deep, living in the streets, and becoming a part of the street scene. It was like . . . . . . . . . being in the jungles again. But he stumbles on to some deep dog doo-doo. Ignoring the warnings to back off, Herman steps on a lot of big toes. Heads rolls, heads from City Hall to County Hall, and every hall in between. Herman goes to become a hero in the city. Climbing the ladder of success, he takes top detective of the year, twice. But the fallen powers of yester day were not sleeping. This is a book where the good guy looses. This is a book about the real world. Where the power of the system is the god.

“Yes, but later, when they speak of her, what do they say?” I asked.”Oh hell, I don’t know. I just fill the glasses. Man, this is the kind of talk that makes a barkeep like me goofy. Mostly, I keep the customers on the other side of the counter, but she, she can’t be stopped – comes over the top and just rips your spleen.”"Fill the glasses. Mop the bar. You probably know, they’re closing this place next month, and I’m out of work with no prospects, because the urban renewal wrecking ball is knocking down, not just this joint, but the whole Avenue, and, and all I’m doing is worrying what’s going to happen to Abby, but damn it, I can’t help it, this place connect her to Whitey, and all the rest of us to her.”"Ahhh . . . ” He let out a deep sigh, and then leaned over the bar and used his big whisper. “Ah, but this woman did it all . . . And so they . . . They tell of the things she did for Whitey. They tell of her exploits, of her saving his life, and her avenging his death – of her thrusting that heavy auger. And they make up things, sensitive, personal things – lavender baths, rose petal pillows – things no one could possibly know, but we all listen and nod our approval. And now the wrecking ball is coming. And now they ask what will happen . . . “”Look, that’s her, she comes now. Just look at her. My, oh my,” he slowly shakes his head. “Ah, I’ll tell you what they, they . . . they tell of her honor, grace, and beauty. See how she moves, how she takes that stool.” He stood to his full height and hurried down the counter to pour her drinks. I sipped mine, listening, waiting . . . .

Excerpt: The Lexicon of Love is the acclaimed chart-topping debut album by British pop band ABC, released in 1982. It is a concept album in which the singer experiences heartache as he tries and fails to have a meaningful relationship. It was produced by Trevor Horn, engineered by Gary Langan, and featured orchestration by Anne Dudley and Fairlight CMI programming by JJ Jeczalik; Horn, Langan, Dudley and Jeczalik would later form the Art of Noise. Indeed, most of the production team and sessions players listed below would form the basis for the ZTT label, and their work with Horn meant all concerned would be in constant demand throughout the industry in years to come. “Tears Are Not Enough” (in its initial release produced by Steve Brown), “All of My Heart”, “Poison Arrow”, and “The Look of Love (Part One)” were all Top 20 hits in the UK; the last two also charted in the US, peaking at #25 and #14 respectively. The album reached #1 on the British charts, and peaked at #24 in the U.S. charts. In 1998, Q magazine readers voted The Lexicon of Love the 92nd greatest album of all time. In 2000 the same magazine placed it at number 40 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. In 2004, a deluxe 2-disc reissue including outtakes and early demos and a live performance of the album from 1982 was released on the Neutron label. All songs written by ABC except where indicated. Excerpt: Senior club appearances and goalscounted for the domestic league only.* Appearances (Goals) Harold Bodle (4 October 1920 1 January 2005) was an English association footballer who played as an inside left or wing half. He played for Birmingham City in the top flight and for several clubs in the North of England in the lower divisions of the Football League. He was particularly noted for juggling the ball, a skill he claimed to have perfected as a child by repeatedly kicking a small ball against the sideboard at home. Bodle was born in Woodlands, near Doncaster. He played for Doncaster schoolboys before starting work at Silverwood Colliery where he played for the works team. He also played for Ridgehill Athletic and had trials at Doncaster Rovers and Bradford Park Avenue before signing professional forms for Third Division North side Rotherham United in May 1938. His Rotherham career was brief; after nine games in the Football League and just past his 18th birthday Bodle was transferred to First Division Birmingham for the fee of £2,000. His reaction to the move was quoted thus: “It was a total surprise when manager Reg Freeman pulled me aside at the training ground to tell me of The Blues’ interest. I was so excited that when I went back to the training session I lost concentration and went sliding off onto the gravel edge. When I met up with Blues officials later that day I had both my hands bandaged and found it hard to sign the contract!”Bodle played one first-team game for his new club before the outbreak of the Second World War put an end to League football. He made occasional appearances for the club in wartime competition, as well as guesting for Rotherham and Doncaster, for whom he scored 27 goals. He returned to Birmingham to play … More:

Excerpt: CIDR-FM – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The station was originally launched by Western Ontario Broadcasting in 1948 as CKLW-FM, rebroadcasting the CBC Dominion Network programming of sister station CKLW. It dropped the CBC affiliation in 1950, and became the Metro Detroit outlet of the Mutual Broadcasting System. The stations were subsequently acquired in 1956 by a consortium including the American company RKO; RKO subsequently acquired full ownership of the stations in 1963. Also that year, CKLW-FM began airing distinct programming from its AM sister station. It originally broadcast two hours of separate programming each evening from 7 to 9 p.m., and in 1967, this was expanded to six hours per night (from 6 p.m. to midnight). In 1970, due to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s new rules on foreign ownership of Canadian media, RKO was forced to sell the stations to Baton Broadcasting. Under Baton’s ownership, CKLW-FM completely separated programming from its successful Top 40 AM sister, airing a country music format with news and talk oriented toward the Windsor audience (as opposed to the AM, which chiefly targeted the American side). In January 1982, the station changed its callsign to CKJY, airing a big band/adult standards/jazz format. In 1984, with CKLW’s top 40 format on its last legs due to the growing popularity of rock and pop music formats on the FM dial, management tried to move the AM’s top 40 format to the FM dial with the new calls CFXX and the name “94 Fox FM”. The station’s staff spent months preparing for the change, commissioning new jingles, advertising extensively via billboards and television, and practicing the format until they were sure it was ready. Alaska Travelers Sketch Book

Alaska Travelers Sketch Book

$2.81

Many have sketched the coast of Alaska while sailing north. A sketch artist accompanied Capt. James Cook on his many voyages of discovery, including his 1778 visit to Alaska aboard the "Resolution." He looked in vain for the elusive Northwest Passage, a trading route across the top of North America. In 1879, naturalist, conservationist, and writer John Muir made his first trip to Alaska, delighting in the hidden wonders of Alaska’s Panhandle, flanked by the sea on one side and mountains on the other. Although he was best known as a writer, he sketched what he saw, too. Sydney Lawrence traveled to Valdez in 1904, fell in love with Alaska, and remained in the north until his death in 1940. he painted many sailing ships and steamships, often working from his sketches, on his way to becoming Alaska’s most famous resident artist. Following modestly in their footsteps is Gloria Sampson, who sketched her way north on a grand cruise ship that carried her north to her childhood home, evoking nostaligic memories of a teenage girl in the territory of Alaska. We invite you to share her voyage through lovely sketches and personal observations.

Excerpt: Carpenters is the third studio album by The Carpenters. Released on May 14, 1971, the album was successful, reaching #2 on the Billboard 200 chart and #12 in the United Kingdom. With the hit songs “For All We Know”, “Rainy Days and Mondays”, and “Superstar”, Carpenters solidified Karen Carpenter as one of her generation’s most endearing pop vocalists. It has been said that the strength of these recordings is what caused Richard Carpenter to ask his sister to front the band instead of playing behind the drums on every live performance. Amongst many fans, the album has simply been referred to as The Tan Album, because the album itself is like a tan envelope, and is presumably a play on The Beatles’ so-called White Album. In Cash Box’s Top 100 Albums of 1971, Carpenters peaked at #8. This is the first album to feature the familiar Carpenters emblem. All lead vocals are by Karen, except Richard Carpenter sings lead vocal, with Karen in the background, on the tracks, “Druscilla Penny” and “Saturday”. The music of “Rainy Days and Mondays” was composed by Roger Nichols, and the lyrics were written by Paul Williams, who later recorded his own version of the song. It was released as a single and charted well in the United States at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Rainy Days and Mondays” was The Carpenters’ second Nichols/Williams hit, second to “We’ve Only Just Begun” of the Close to You album the previous year. “Saturday” is a short, upbeat song with a runtime of 1:18. It was used as the B-side of “Rainy Days and Mondays.” The song talks about how joyful Saturday is, and how joyful it is to finish Friday. In 1973 on the TV program Robert Young with the Young, Richard and Karen perform “Saturday” and talk about its meaning. “Let Me Be the One” has a r… More:

Alphaville: 1988, Crime, Punishment, and the Battle for New York City’s Lower East Side

$23.2

In the late 1980s, Manhattan’s Alphabet City was a no man’s land that city-savvy visitors avoided. With its burned-out slums and heroin hangouts, the Lower East Side on the wrong side of First Avenue felt like a separate country, ruled by drug dealers. At the top of this punk pyramid was Davie Blue Eyes, a cold-eyed killer who despised competitors and the police, especially a plainclothes narcotics cop named Mike Codella, the author of this memoir. This vivid, bust-by-bust account of the downfall of the mobster and his Forty Thieves henchmen has an in-your-face force that will make you double lock all your doors.

America the Wrong Way: – on the trail of a nation’s Soul

$10.32

‘America the Wrong Way’ is not an insightful expose of the Bush-Schwarzenegger Texas-Hollywood axis, nor is it a critique of the might of the Military-Industrial-Globalisation complex. It is a light-hearted account of a coast-to-coast journey across America in a west to east direction, attempting to follow the historic Route 66 for much of the way and travelling in an old open-top gas guzzler. This story is not ‘just another travelogue.’ An anecdotal style highlights the beauty and warmth of America and its people, and tells the very human stories of people and places encountered en route. The foibles and idiosyncrasies of characters, and the tragedies and triumphs of American history, are seen through the perceptive but sympathetic eyes of a visitor from Europe. This pathfinding journey was the warm-up act for an all-girl tribute band on the run, drawn from a troop of sprightly swingers the wrong side of sixty, as an unsuspecting America faced the biggest outbreak of trans-Atlantic musical mayhem since the Beatles hit New York’s Shea Stadium in 1965. ‘America the Wrong Way’ was originally born out of a project to raise money for charity, and a contribution from net proceeds goes to support sufferers from Motor Neurone Disease.

An Unacceptable Death (Munch Mancini Series #8)

$16.95

One thing about Miranda Mancini that has never changed is the name everyone knows her by—-Munch. But the child abused by her father and sent into prostitution, the young girl who stole money because she couldn’t do without her drugs, the woman who spent awful months in prison—-that person no longer exists. Instead, Munch Mancini is the surrogate “mother” of a friend’s loving little girl, a woman who can top any male car mechanic’s talents with a tool, and the unbelievably happy fiancée of police detective Enrique “Rico” Chacón. It’s an ordinary life and it’s exactly what she wants. Everything changes when an early-morning call from homicide detective Mace St. John, the nearest thing Munch has to a father, brings unbelievably terrible news. Rico is dead, having been shot during a drug bust. Munch learns that Rico was shot by one of his fellow officers—-and not by accident. This news energizes Munch in a way she wouldn’t have believed possible. She knows in her head and her heart that Rico could not have been on the wrong side of the drug bust. The police department insists that Rico was working with the drug dealers. But a pair of special officers with Narcotics have other ideas. They ask Munch to go undercover and mix with the suspected dealers. They are certain it will prove that Rico was innocent. Munch agrees. She could easily end up dead herself—-but if she can clear Rico’s name, she will have what she wants. That’s Munch Mancini.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG – - In the dusk of an October evening, a sensible looking woman of forty came out through an oaken door to a broad landing on the first floor of an old English country-house. A braid of her hair had fallen forward as if she had been stooping over book or pen; and she stood for a moment to smooth it, and to gaze contemplatively – not in the least sentimentally – through the tall, narrow window. The sun was setting, but its glories were at the other side of the house; for this window looked eastward, where the landscape of sheepwalks and pasture land was sobering at the approach of darkness. The lady, like one to whom silence and quiet were luxuries, lingered on the landing for some time. Then she turned towards another door, on which was inscribed, in white letters, Class Room No. 6. Arrested by a whispering above, she paused in the doorway, and looked up the stairs along a broad smooth handrail that swept round in an unbroken curve at each landing, forming an inclined plane from the top to the bottom of the house.

The five-day work policy imposed by the government in 2001 following rapid economic development in Taiwan provided an extra day off from work and school every week, and people started looking for leisure and recreation activities for the “long weekend.” To meet the needs for leisure and recreation, many investors in Taiwan started to put money into the fitness market to provide various facilities to attract people and help them to maintain their health. These places also introduced programs for Yoga, traditional ethnic dance, and Tai Chi to achieve the purposes of exercise and releasing pressure from work, in addition to physical fitness. Aerobic dance has gained popularity in fitness in the past 10 years. Dance has been considered one of the top choices among diversified leisure and recreational practices. A side benefit to this is that people have started to learn to appreciate dance, as well as other artistic activities and events. Many instructors teaching Yoga, ethnic dance, and aerobic dance do not have a background in dance. Based on the belief that students majoring in dance can provide more professional instruction, the main purpose of this study was to examine the satisfaction level of students majoring in dance as it related to the dance curricula offered in their schools. A secondary purpose of this study was to determine whether or not universities offering disciplines in dance should alter or redesign their curricula to integrate dance into fitness or leisure programs to provide students with more career options.;Descriptive research was conducted in this study. A self-constructed survey questionnaire was developed as an instrument for data collection. The subjects were students majoring in dance at the university level (N = 439) in Taiwan. The effective rate of returned survey questionnaires was over 99%. The Cronbach alpha coefficient was .874, which showed the stability of the internal-consistency reliability. SPSS, version 15.0, for MS Windows was
